The Weather Channel pulling the plug
NWOntario.net will be removing 'The Weather Channel' weather data from our weather information pages soon after October 2011. This decision was made when NWOntario.net received a notice that 'The Weather Channel' RSS type XML Data Feed that we use to deliver 'The Weather Channel' weather data will be discontinued midnight Eastern time on November 15, 2011. The Weather Channel will be replacing the RSS feed by a paid API type subscription service focused on a US market that is incompatible with our current system. Because NWOntario.net is a FREE website and focused on information for Northwestern Ontario CANADA, rewriting our system to accommodate a data stream that we have to pay for to use/access that may or may not contain information pertinent to all the communities of Northwestern Ontario just is not a viable option.
If you have been following our weather pages, you will have noticed that we really did not entirely rely on 'The Weather Channel' data as we also included data from Environment Canada. We placed both on one page to let our users/visitors decide what report they wanted. 'The Weather Channel' data was placed above Environment Canada report only because it was shorter with less detail for the user/visitor that wanted only a quick look at the weather conditions. Environment Canada data was after that only because it was more detailed for the user/visitor that wanted to take the time to absorb the details and maybe compare the two reports.
As far as I know, Environment Canada hopefully will not change how they do things, and the only real impact on the weather pages will be that you will not be able to compare reports Environment Canada vs. The Weather Channel and you will have to settle for the more detailed Environment Canada weather report only.
Admin,
NWOntario.net
- UPDATE:
- It seems that 'The Weather Channel' did not pull the plug, yet. NWOntario.net will continue to provide information from both weather networks as long as they continue to provide data feeds to NWOntario.net site. If you see that the 'The Weather Channel' data go off-line before I do just contact me (the admin) and I will update the pages.
