Donna heisholt
Born and living in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Donna painted since childhood in oils, taught by her mom. Following some exposure to academic training (Sheridan College, Oakville) raising a family and working in the salaried world, she finally began exhibiting in the late 1990's to a surprisingly encouraging reception. A purchase award resulting in her art (Hoito Restaurant) being published as the cover of the Thunder Bay Telephone directory in 1999, and purchase of her second released piece (Woodside Foundry) by the Thunder Bay Art Gallery. She began immediately to seek out local mentors in her interest area of urbanscapes and devote serious full-time work in acrylic painting with the goal of amassing a Thunder Bay body of work. Since then over one hundred of her local scenes have come into existence including a large number of buildings and streetscapes that have been lost to history. From hot dog joints to closed high schools, hospitals and bridges to four eras of City Hall, three eras of Thunder Bay Harbour, many Sleeping Giants and even our recently-lost beloved city Tree at Deadman's Curve, the collection keeps growing. How the subjects are chosen is usually a matter of her personal involvement and nostalgia. She feels if it makes her feel something, others will too, and they certainly have by their response to her work.
Donna is also a winter resident of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, where she is a member of the SSI Painters Guild. She has begun her collection of Salt Spring town scenes (Ganges and Fulford) for distribution there this year.
